Two sisters from Alice Springs, who supported each other through twin breast cancer diagnoses, will next month fly to a mystery destination to take part in a television series.

Angel and Karina Akarana, who last year appeared in an episode of “the world’s only socially conscious travel show,” Adventure All Stars, will return to the silver screen for the program’s upcoming ‘Legends’ series.

Adventure All Stars combines adventure and philanthropy, with participants in the show being required to fundraise for their nominated charity in order to secure their ticket to the “trip of a lifetime”.

Angel told the NT News it was not difficult to choose their charity, So Brave, a breast cancer charity for women under 40 that has a presence in Alice Springs, after what the pair went through together.

Karina, the older sister, was the first to receive her diagnosis, estrogen receptive positive (meaning it can be treated with endocrine therapy) Stage 2 breast cancer, in 2013.

She again was struck down with breast cancer, this time Stage 3, in 2016.

Then, in 2021, it was Angel’s turn, a diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer, meaning her only recourse was a punishing merry-go-round of “very strong” chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, then chemotherapy again.

“It was fast, aggressive and spreading,” Angel, who has lived in Melbourne for the past decade, said.

“I was fit, healthy and took care of my body. It can happen to anyone.”

Having her sister to guide her through the draining process was a vital support, Angel said.

“Because I’d seen my sister go through it I was kind of prepared,” she said.

“Two sisters in a family, having each other to fall back on.

“Me not knowing certain things, I could clarify if she ever went through it.”

While in remission, Angel still lives with the “scanxiety” of knowing that triple negative breast cancer as abnormally high rates of recurrence within the first five years.

“It’s about thinking positively, knowing you’ll get through it, and if things pop up, take it as it comes,” Angel said.

“Trust in your medical team.

“Look after yourself.

“It took me a while to realise you need to slow down, let your body heal.”

By the time they fly to their mystery destination next month – it will be somewhere in Australia, having previously visited South Australia’s Clare Valley during their debut turn on the series – they expect to have raised close to $40,000 for So Brave.

Adventure All Stars airs on 7plus.
