It took police multiple attempts to detain a 30-year-old alleged offender in Alice Springs on Wednesday, including “unintentionally” striking him with a police car.
NT Police said they first received reports of numerous assaults in Todd Mall about 7.15pm.
“The male offender allegedly assaulted a female believed to be known to him in Todd Mall,” an NT Police spokesman said.
“A nearby male pedestrian attempted to intervene and was also assaulted by the offender.
“He again assaulted and stomped on the female victim before fleeing the scene.
“A short time later, the offender ran across Gregory Terrace without due care and was unintentionally struck by an unmarked police vehicle.
“Police arrested the male and conveyed him to Alice Springs Hospital for assessment.
“He subsequently escaped custody at the hospital and was reapprehended by police following a taser deployment after he failed to follow police directions.”
The 30-year-old appeared in Alice Springs local court on Thursday charged with recklessly endangering serious harm, aggravated assault, assault person preventing injury another, escape from lawful custody and engage in conduct that contravenes DVO.
The driver of the police vehicle returned a negative alcohol test.
