The Nightcliff Tigers winning form continued on the island as they found another gear late to see off the challenge of the Tiwi Bombers on their home track.

The Tigers were arguably the most in form side coming into the fray, having beaten both of last year’s grand finalists in St Mary’s and Southern Districts on the bounce.

In what was a tight encounter across the earlier quarters, Nightcliff pulled away in the final term to defeat the Bombers 13.4 (82) to 6.7 (43).

Frances Tipungwuti got the home side under way with a typically energetic snap to score the opener, but it soon became clear that Nightcliff were more than in the fray.

Wade Derksen, who spent the past four years on the GWS Giants list, scored eight for the game to announce himself as a player in the race to top the goal scoring.

He was well aided by the men in the midfield, including his skipper Brodie Filo and Lachlan Tardrew, who scored twice coming back into the outfit.

A lightning delay threatened to end the match early as it had done on Wurrumiyanga Oval in at least one match in the previous two seasons.

But play eventually resumed and it was the Tigers who had the better of the occasion, having led at every change.

They furthered their advantage in the second half, particularly in the final term where they kept the Bombers without a point.

Nightcliff has nailed down its place as the NTFL’s form side after claiming the scalps of both of last year’s grand finalists in the space of three weeks.

But the challenges keep on coming as the Tigers get set for a trip to the Tiwi Islands to take on the dangerous Bombers.

WHY TO WATCH

The Tigers snapped 2024 premier Southern Districts’ 17-game unbeaten run last time out, fresh after beating losing grand finalists St Mary’s and look the goods to continue their winning ways.

They pulled victory over the Crocs without some of their midfield stars such as Brandan Parfitt and Peter Politis, but instead the likes of Mitchell Trewhella and Riley Baldi stepped up.

Brodie Filo continues to rack up the possessions while Marly McGregor and Wade Derksen are coming into their own upfront – and that’s not even mentioning their typically strong backline.

The Bombers meanwhile will want to make an impression in their third and last home game of the season, and will be hoping to right their defeat dealt by Waratah last time at this ground.

Tiwi have the skills and pace to mix it with Nightcliff as proven in their Round 1 meeting where inaccuracies in front of goal were the defining factor.

Karlson Kantilla and Thaddeus Puautjimi both gave strong accounts of themselves last time out while Jack Steel is coming into his own as a forward anchor.
