Territory students were celebrated for their outstanding achievements in 2024 at the Northern Territory Board of Studies Awards ceremony held at Parliament House on Friday, January 31.

More than 300 people attended to see 88 awards presented to 55 students across 25 categories. The event, hosted by the Honourable Jo Hersey, Minister for Education and Training, welcomed parents, families, educators, school staff and students.

The event recognises high performance across a broad range of categories and subjects, and highlights what young people can achieve when committing to education and working hard to achieve results.

Notable high achievers were Darwin High School’s Muhammad Qasim and Zirui Zheng who each received seven awards, and The Essington School’s Samuel Ricketts who won six awards including the Chief Minister’s award for the Most Outstanding Stage 2 Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) Student.

Samuel also received Certificates of Merit for Physics and Philosophy.

To top off his evening, in the sponsored categories he also received the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Physics Award and the Rotary Club of Darwin Hugh Bradley Award for Humanities.

Muhammad received Certificates of Merit for achieving outstanding results in Biology, Chemistry and Specialist Mathematics.

In the sponsored categories he received the Australian Veterinary Association Science Award, the Menzies School of Health Research Biology Award, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Chemistry Award, and received a Top 20 NTCET Students Award.

Fellow Darwin High School student Zirui Zheng took home Certificates of Merit in

Accounting, English as an Additional Language, Mathematical Methods and Specialists Mathematics.

In the sponsored categories she received the Mathematics Teachers Association NT Award and the Department of Treasury and Finance – Accounting Award.

She was also a recipient of a Top 20 NTCET Students Award.

Scarlett Parkin of Haileybury Rendall School and Jemma Stark of Sanderson Middle School were respectively awarded the Administrator’s Medal for Territory Middle Years Scholar and

Administrator’s Medal for Territory Primary Years Scholar, proudly presented by His Honour

Professor the Honourable Hugh Heggie AO PSM, Administrator of the Northern Territory.

At the awards, Scarlett was praised by her teachers and peers as possessing admirable

resilience and grit with a keen interest in the environment and academic achievement in

Chinese and Indonesian language.

Jemma was recognised by her peers as a straight A student who has gone over and above in the realms of fundraising and volunteering.

All of those awarded stand as a testament to their families, schools and the Territory community as a whole, that education is of the utmost importance, and the future is bright for those who give it their all.
