New date set for Ironman Cairns

Far North Queensland’s biggest sports event has a new date, with Ironman Group confirming a new date for the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship and Ironman 70.3 Cairns.

Far North Queensland’s biggest sports event has a new date.

The annual multisports event was originally set to be held on June 7, but the impact of the coronavirus pandemic wiped it from the calendar.

Organisers immediately got to work trying to secure a new date, a task made much more difficult with almost all Ironman events scheduled for this year facing the same uncertain outlook.

But on Thursday afternoon, Ironman Group announced that Ironman Cairns would be held on Sunday, September 27.

Both the Asia-Pacific Championship and Ironman 70.3 will be contested on the same day.

The championship provides for 75 qualifying slots for the 2021 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Ironman 70.3 Cairns will provide for 80 qualifying slots and 25 Women For Tri qualifying slots to the 2020 Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Taupo, New Zealand.
