A CAMPERVAN telling Cairns locals to “f*** off” during their morning commute is the latest evidence of the State Government’s inability to crack down on offensive advertising.
The brightly decorated Wicked Campers van — boasting the full spelling of the offending word in place of asterisks — has been doing the rounds in the Cairns CBD in recent days.
Yesterday it was parked on the Esplanade while passing motorists visibly shook their heads upon reading the message received from a long-haired guest to their town.
“Let’s play a game of f*** off … You go first,” it spewed.
Several more vans with objectionable messages have also been spotted in Cairns in recent weeks.
One asks: “Am I still a virgin if I take it up the sh**ter?”
Another is perhaps even more disrespectful than the unwarranted and crude reference to anal sex — and it has been making headlines for years without being taken off the road.
“The best thing about oral sex — five minutes of silence,” it pronounces.
Queensland, Tasmania and the ACT have all passed laws allowing vehicles to be deregistered if the Advertising Standards Bureau upholds complaints about offensive slogans.
Owners — in this case Wicked Campers — are given 14 days to remove the phrase or artwork or have the vehicle taken from the road.
In practice, it has failed.
Each of the three objectionable Wicked Camper vans spotted in Cairns in recent weeks were registered in South Australia, where the Queensland Government holds no jurisdiction to enforce deregistration.
