TASMANIAN-FILMED TV series The Kettering Incident has been a “monumental” hit for Foxtel — but confused fans are desperate to know if there will be a second series.

The highly anticipated final episode of the pay-TV production this week ended mysteriously, leaving fans with more questions than answers.

Foxtel head of drama Penny Win did not rule out a second series.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the incredible response we’ve had to The Kettering Incident. It has been a monumental success for Foxtel,” Ms Win told the Mercury.

“We are looking at story ideas with the producers, however, we have no announcement at this stage.”

The $14 million production was the largest television series filmed in the state and attracted more than 500,000 viewers in the top-rating Monday night slot on Foxtel, previously occupied by the hugely popular Game of Thrones.

Some online Mercury readers were left confused by the how the series ended on Monday night, labelling it “disappointing” and “disjointed”.

Mercury film critic Tim Martain said The Kettering Incident was a superbly written mystery thriller with a distinctly Tasmanian tone, making it both unique and addictive.

“The writers clearly had season two in mind when they came up with that tantalising cliffhanger and I hope Foxtel gives it the green light,” he said.

“I know a lot of people who are passionately engaged in a post-mortem of the series after the finale, which just shows how precise and intriguing the plotting has been.

The Kettering Incident has painted a beautifully gothic image of Tasmania that I’m sure will bring us a lot more attention from producers as well as viewers, especially once the series screens overseas.”

Arts Minister Vanessa Goodwin said The Kettering Incident demonstrated audiences had an appetite for compelling and distinctive Tasmanian stories.

She said in addition to generating a local spend of nearly $6 million and providing 110 jobs for local cast, the series would promote Tasmania to a worldwide audience.

“I found The Kettering Incident to be a gripping series and eagerly awaited each episode to see Tasmania showcased as part of an intriguing and mysterious story drawing on keyelements of Tasmania’s sociopolitical history,” Dr Goodwin said.
