Wet weather fails to halt Innisfail Golf Club Championships

RAIN, hail or shine was the slogan on the fairways over the weekend, with the Innisfail Golf Club crowning their new club champions after four days of “British Open” conditions.

The Club Championship was a welcome return to competitive play for the Innisfail golfing fraternity who have gone without their tournament “fix” due to COVID-19.

Andrew Rose entered the second weekend of play with a commanding lead over his rivals following dazzling performances on day one and two.

His form would carry over to day three and four to eventually win with a healthy advantage.

Fellow A Grade competitor and Innisfail Golf Club’s junior co-ordinator Jake Cockle said the field “didn’t get enough shots back” on Rose to chew into his lead.

In other divisions, Colin Lyons took home the B Grade title by a solid margin; Kevin Walsh won a tight contest in C Grade by three shots; Addi Butorac was victorious in Ladies Division 1 over Deb Smith; and Hayley Barber held her nerve to clinch the Ladies Division 2 title.

Cockle said the depth across all five classifications was as good as it had ever been.

“It’s probably the biggest field we’ve seen start and finish in the last five years,” he said.

“We always get a few who drop out for work reasons but it was really good to see so many people even in the bad weather finish all four days of the championships.”

The club’s attention will now turn towards the Innisfail Open, which is set to be played on the first weekend of September.

“The Open should be a good money boost for the club because people come from all over the Far North hunting points,” Cockle said.

“Those vying for the FNQ Player of the Year title will be out in force.”
