A popular piece of basketball equipment has been urgently recalled by Product Safety Australia amid fears it could cause death or serious injury if not installed correctly.

On Tuesday, PSA issued a recall for the Russel Corp Australia Spalding NBA board/mounting bracket/rim combo.

The board, which comes in two sizes – 44 inch or 52 inch – is made of an acrylic backing with a heavy duty steal frame.

However, the backboard, which had been sold in Rebel Sport stores, was not supplied with the required warnings or installation instructions.

The PSA said the product presented a hazard if users were not aware of the safety precautions, including not to fix the ring or backboard to bricks.

“There is a risk of serious injury or death to the user if the product is not installed correctly or if the user swings off the basketball ring,” PSA said.

The boards were sold between December 2018 and May 2021.

Anyone who has bought a backboard and is concerned should contact Russell Corporation via email at backboards@spalding.com.au or call 1300 020 879.

Consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately if it has been installed incorrectly.
