The Snitch: Life’s a beach for Moses Obeid on summer holidays

With surfboard firmly under one arm and sunnies in place, Moses Obeid has taken advantage of the recent summer weather to hit the beach, looking far from concerned about his upcoming trial on criminal charges.

With surfboard firmly under one arm and sunnies well and truly in place, Moses Obeid has taken advantage of the recent summer weather to hit the beach on the state’s mid-north coast.

One of Snitch’s correspondents spotted the son of disgraced former politician Eddie Obeid in Port Macquarie on Thursday, and snapped these pics of him frolicking in the shallows and getting some help putting sunscreen on those hard-to-reach places.

Looking far from concerned about his upcoming trial on criminal charges, Obeid spent the day with family and friends at Town Beach.

The Obeid family has a long, and occasionally controversial, association with Port Macquarie, and Snitch has been told Moses and Co are holidaying in some of the town’s luxury digs.

In one of its hearings, the Independent Commission Against Corruption was told the Obeids bought a penthouse in the Rydges Hotel in town that was funded by $30 million acquired through a corrupt coal mining deal.

The ICAC investigation, known as Operation Jasper, ultimately found Eddie, Moses and former state MP Ian Macdonald to be corrupt.

All three are set to face trial on criminal charges that followed the investigation. They are set to fight the charges.

Another of Eddie’s sons, Gerard Obeid, owns a waterside property on Pacific Dr.

It has previously been reported that the Obeids obtained a 16ha block of land on Ocean Dr in 1988 from the late corrupt former Strathfield mayor John Abi-Saab.

NYE WITH CHARLIE

Some people have a ‘‘light bulb moment’’ on New Year’s Eve. But it seems Sydney’s favourite naughty barrister Charles Waterstreet had a different kind of bulb moment.

Waterstreet, who enjoys sweeping views of Sydney from his balcony, took in the December 31 light show in the company of two unidentified ladies.

What stood out in a pic he posted was the sizeable pot full of what looks like nitrous oxide bulbs at the feet of one of the ladies.

Also known as nangs, the controversial bulbs have been in the headlines of late because they provide a cheap, legal high that can be bought over the counter.

Asked about the photo, Mr Waterstreet said the pot was actually art.

“It’s an installation piece that makes a pointed postmodern commentary on today’s lockout
law society,” he said.

“It’s called ‘Inconvenience Store’.”

Asked who the ladies were, Mr Waterstreet said: “Er … hmmm. I can’t remember, it was last year.”

UNHAPPY MEAL

A Big Mac meal and a few chicken nuggets has landed one sneaky Corrective Services officer more than he bargained for.

Lawrence O’Driscoll-Faitua was charged last month for pretending to be a cop to get a cheap feed, but the details of his calorie-packed order can now be revealed.

The hungry officer flashed his access card for the Surry Hills Police Centre at Kingsford McDonald’s on December 29.

It is alleged O’Driscoll-Faitua feigned being a NSW Police officer to get a 50 per cent discount on his order — a Big Mac meal and chicken nuggets — which costs about $20 full-price.

While it did the trick, the eagle-eyed store manager was suspicious and called the real cops. As it turns out the boys in blue are quite protective of their fast-food discount.

Two days later, O’Driscoll-Faitua, back working at Surry Hills cells, was made an example of and slapped with two criminal charges and a job suspension.

The 43-year-old is due to appear in Waverley Local Court on two offences of impersonating a police officer and obtain benefit by deception.

MURDERER VS TERRORIST

NSW’s most notorious inmate and a convicted terrorist have added to their lengthy rap sheets after a punch-up in Goulburn’s Supermax.

Bassam Hamzy reportedly came off second-best in a jail fracas.

On October 28, friends Bassam Hamzy, 40, and Talal Alameddine, 26, became foes when they went at it in the exercise yard of the maximum security prison.

It appears Hamzy, a gang boss and convicted murderer, didn’t live up to his feared reputation and came out worse off.

According to the police version of events, Alameddine, who supplied the gun that killed police accountant Curtis Cheng in 2016, managed to land at least seven punches on Hamzy after grabbing hold of his shirt.

The melee continued in the day room before guards rushed in to break up the fight.

Strike Force Raptor paid the jail a visit on New Year’s Eve and served them both with a court attendance notice for affray.

They will appear in court in February.
