Territory marks 53rd anniversary of historic Wave Hill Walk Off
‘The Freedom Day festival is a constant reminder that the battle is not over for those things that we fight for as a people.’
TERRITORIANS have once again gathered in Kalkarindji to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the Wave Hill Walk Off which sparked the land rights movement in 1966.
NT Senator Malarndirri McCarthy urged the younger generations re-enacting the march to “stay strong in what you believe in that is best for you, your families, your country”.
“That’s what coming together here on Gurindji country is about,” she said.
“Being strong, staying strong, remembering the example of the Gurindji and the resilience of the families here who every year come together to share in Freedom Day.”
Ms McCarthy said the anniversary, known as Freedom Day, was a reminder of the continued struggle for freedom from tyranny, oppression and inequality.
“This is why you are here, we are still fighting for freedom, for fairness, for equality in the workplace, fighting for our homes, our health, our housing and the needs of our country,” she said.
“To first nations people across Australia, the Freedom Day festival is a constant reminder that the battle is not over for those things that we fight for as a people.”
