A JUBILANT Bill Shorten has claimed victory for Labor in four of the five seats that were contested today, with Rebekha Sharkie from Central Alliance set to return in the seat of Mayo.
BILL Shorten has claimed victory for Labor in four of today's five by-elections, with Rebekha Sharkie holding off a challenge from high profile candidate Georgina Downer to retain the seat of Mayo.
The success story for Labor tonight was the Queensland seat of Longman, where Susan Lamb enjoyed a substantial swing. In the Tasmanian seat of Braddon, Liberal candidate Brett Whiteley refused to concede defeat, but most commentators believed Justine Keay would hold on to the seat.
Labor's Patrick Gorman and Josh Wilson were elected in Perth and Fremantle, as expected.
