Just before 9pm on Tuesday, the man was hit by the heavy vehicle 2km south of Mataranka.

The driver stopped and reported the incident and is assisting police with inquiries.

Police are now trying to piece together the moments before the incident.

They are asking for any witnesses who may have seen the victim’s grey Ford Escape in the lead-up to the crash.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said investigators were particularly interested in the car’s movements between 7pm and 9pm.

“We are seeking information in relation to a grey Ford Escape station wagon which we believe had been driven by the deceased prior to the crash,” said Sen Sgt Brendan Lindner

“It was parked on the side of the road and in proximity to the crash.

“We seek to establish the movements of the man and his vehicle throughout the day prior to the crash.”

The Stuart Highway was closed for some time on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning but has since reopened.

NT Police Northern Watch Commander Wolfgang Langeneck said it was a sad reminder of how dangerous our roads can be at all times, with the accident coming just two days from Christmas.
