NEW $135 million Spirit of Tasmania port facilities in Geelong are expected to house more than 100 ongoing jobs.
The onshore roles will support the general operations of the Spirit of Tasmania when it relocates from Station Pier in 2022.
The 12-hectare terminal and freight facility on Corio Quay Rd is being developed by GeelongPort which has lodged a key planning submission with the City of Greater Geelong.
The precinct will include a passenger terminal building, a vehicle marshalling area for 600 cars, a parking area for 150 trucks, security facilities, public amenities, crew accommodation, a cafe, children’s play area and a pet exercise area.
GeelongPort CEO Brett Winter said construction of the facilities, expected to start early next year, was expected to generate up to 75 jobs.
“We will be looking at engaging with local contractors and suppliers later this year once we have planning approvals in place and detailed design finalised,” Mr Winter said.
Mr Winter said that with the support of Regional Development Victoria, GeelongPort had been working with key stakeholders including the City of Greater Geelong and various State Government agencies through the planning process.
While GeelongPort is fully funding the $135 million development, government support is required for public road infrastructure in the surrounding area.
“We have been in discussions with State and Federal Government on funding for the public road infrastructure upgrades in the direct vicinity of the terminal,” Mr Winter said.
“We are hoping for a timely and positive outcome to support the broader success of the project.”
He said work was being undertaken to assess improvements to local roads ahead of a funding request to government to improve public road infrastructure and enhance the operation of the terminal over the next 30 years.
The two Spirit of Tasmania vessels will carry more than 450,000 passengers to and from Corio Quay, driving an estimated increase of $170 million in tourism expenditure by 2029.
An online project site giving the community project updates is expected to launch next month.
