Scott Morrison calls federal election

Scott Morrison was told to "not give up his day job" at a bingo night, whilst Tony Abbott told publicans renewables should not be subsidised and foreign aid should be limited.

Scott Morrison was an unexpected special guest at the Windsor RSL bingo night in western Sydney tonight.

With a schooner in hand the Prime Minister took charge of calling the numbers but was clearly a bit baffled by the high-tech operation – remember the old days where balls were picked out of a spinner.

Not all the patrons were pleased with his calling with one lady yelling out “don’t give up your day job” to a roar of laughter from the crowd.

Strangely the media weren’t invited to watch Mr Morrison’s bingo apprenticeship despite a 30-strong pack of journalists following him on the first day of the campaign.

Meanwhile Tony Abbott took questions from publicans in the seat of Warringah where he said renewables should not be subsidised and foreign aid should be limited.

Bill Shorten's first official media appearance was at a suburban family home in the Melbourne electorate of Deakin, held by Liberal Michael Sukkar.

Picking Deakin, in Mr Shorten's home state of Victoria, was a bold warning that Labor is making a play for seats that are considered "safe" Liberal electorates.

Labor leader Bill Shorten told reporters on his morning run that he was prepared.

“I’m ready for the election, I’m ready for government,” he said in Melbourne. “I’ve got a more united, experienced team. This election will be a choice, it will be a choice about more cuts or better health care for your family.”
