Popular Christmas gifts: What Australian boys and girls want

There's less than one week to go before Christmas, and Aussie boys and girls have revealed what presents they want to find under the tree.

With less than one week to go many family and friends will be rushing to bricks and mortar stores to snap up last-minute gifts and ensure they have them in time for Christmas Day.

New research from kids pocket money app Rooster Money asked 5000 Australian children aged four to 14 what they want from Santa this year. Lego was the most wanted gift for boys and phones for girls.

Toyworld Australia’s general manager Geoff Morton said 2020 had proven a challenge for many Australians but choosing the right gift would help ensure Christmas Day was special for families and friends.

“This year we have seen a move towards family fun and we expect that this trend will continue into the first part of the new year with Lego, jigsaws and board games playing a big part in the summer school holidays,” Mr Morton said.

“However there are still a few other stand out toys that are on a number of Santa’s lists like Bluey, Paw Patrol and of course the hugely popular L.O.L. range.”

Mother-of-two Katherine Houdalakis, 43, from Clarinda in Melbourne’s southeast, said toys, books and nerf guns are on the wishlist for her children Maria, 8, and Kosta, 4, this year.

“We recently got Lego and a new tablet but this year the kids really want toys and books,” she said

“I’ve almost finished Christmas shopping and we’re spending about $200 on each child, I’ve priced compared quite a bit.”

Myer chief customer chief Geoff Ikin said they’ve ensured they have a wide range of toys to “suit any age, stage or budget this Christmas”.

“The toys we have seen flying off the shelves this Christmas include Lego, Barbie, Harry Potter, Star Wars products, as well as the ever popular FAO Schwartz Toys range,” he said. “We are also seeing Disney Frozen, Fisher Price products and Paw Patrol gifts being very popular this Christmas.”

The Australian Retailers Association’s chief executive officer Paul Zahra said it’s “too late to shop online and be guaranteed delivery before Christmas”.

“This is where physical stores become exceptionally busy and the retailers have worked hard to remain COVID-19-safe and consumers will move to worrying about convenience rather than price,” he said.

Mr Zahra said the popular toys this year included, “Lego, Thomas the Tank Engine, Tonka trucks and Barbie dolls”.

“Technology has remained strong, anything to do with gaming has been equally as popular,” he said.
