A police officer has been hit in the face in a Sydney carpark after officers tried to stop a car they believe was involved in an armed robbery. Capsicum spray and a taser were used to subdue the group.

A police officer has been hit in the face in a northern beaches carpark after officers tried to stop a car they believe was involved in an armed robbery.

The VW Amarok allegedly tried to speed away from police in the Dee Why Beach carpark when it slammed into a convertible, injuring a woman in the driver’s seat at 2pm on Monday.

As police tried to arrest those inside they violently resisted — one man was seen delivering a savage right hand punch to an officer’s head.

Two police were assaulted before capsicum spray and a Taser were used to subdue the group.

Three men, aged 27, 22 and 21, and two women, aged 19 and 24, were charged late on Monday. Four were refused bail to front Manly Local Court on Tuesday.

Police suspect the Amarok may be connected to an armed robbery in the Hunter Region on December 22.

A male senior constable was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital after the carpark brawl.

“Police aren’t there to be assaulted, they are doing their job. We will use appropriate force when necessary,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Mark Walton said.

The woman in the parked vehicle was treated for minor injuries.
