Sydney hit with tough new water restrictions

Tens of thousands of litres of drinking water has been stolen from a council facility in Murwillumbah on the NSW Far North Coast.

Police say thieves driving a Toyota Hilux and water tanker entered the town between 8 and 9pm on Monday and took off with about 25,000 litres of water, just days before Level 2 water restrictions are imposed on the area.

The Northern Star reports CCTV footage which captured the heist has been given to authorities and the vehicles have since been identified.

Tweed Shire Council General Manager Troy Green said the operators of the commercial truck and utility could expect a knock on the door from police.

“The theft of a very large volume of drinking water is a criminal act and we will be seeking to prosecute the offenders,” said Mr Green.

“The Tweed goes on to Level 2 restrictions from tomorrow when we will be asking every resident to save 50 litres of water every day, so we certainly will not tolerate any theft of this precious resource.’’
