A MAJOR proposed development in Nightcliff that includes a childcare centre and medical clinic could spell the end for Darwin’s only accredited bowling alley.

A new development application, lodged by Auspac NT, has proposed building a childcare centre for 100 children, community centre, restaurant, medical clinic and offices at 69 Progress Dr, Nightcliff.

The single-storey development encompasses the former UBET offices and the current home of Bruno Maglieri’s Planet Tenpin bowling alley.

The social sports venue is the only bowling alley in Darwin accredited for competitions and Mr Maglieri said the new proposal could be the demise of the business if it is unable to find a new location.

Mr Maglieri said he knew the end of Planet Tenpin at its current location was imminent but the business was struggling to get financial backing from the banks and support from the government to move to a new site.

Planet Tenpin may have to pack up in as little as six months and if successful, would move to a new site beyond the Berrimah Line.

Mr Maglieri said the total closure of the venue would mean the end of access of the sport for “everyone, including so many people with disabilities, school and community groups”.

This is not the first time a development has been proposed at Progress Dr site but Mr Maglieri said this time the developers were certain this new project would be realised.

A proposal in October 2019 to build two nine-storey residential towers did not end up going ahead.

Now, developers are proposing a childcare centre, complete with outdoor play area, a community centre, and 617 sqm of office space.

The development would also have a medical clinic big enough for two consulting rooms, toilets, 89 onsite carparking spaces and a restaurant, and a wall-mounted e-bike charging facility.

The project, according to documents, will “regenerate the site” and would also “contribute positively” to the area while creating local jobs.
