Former Married At First Sight contestant Nasser Sultan will ride his scooter to “the Oscars” after he walked free for riding it on a suspended licence.
And the reality TV star says he’s not sorry for what he’s done, claiming he needs to get to exclusive parties somehow.
The 51-year-old joked that he tried to give money to a traffic cop after he was pulled over while riding his moped in Redfern three days before Christmas last year.
Sultan said he asked the policeman to let him off, saying ‘do you know who I am?’ to which the alleged MAFS fan replied “my wife loved you on the show, but I can’t.”
“I said ‘what about $100 bucks?’,” Sultan said outside court.
At this point Sultan’s lawyer Wayne Flynn interjected by saying “you were joking though, weren’t you, you were having a bit of humour”.
The pint-sized singleton pleaded guilty to driving a silver TGB 303RS scooter down Walker Street while on the suspended licence at 7.45pm on December 22.
His female passenger’s helmet was not fastened correctly and Sultan claimed to not be aware of his three-month suspension due to demerit points, agreed facts state.
But Magistrate Garry Still dismissed the matter without conviction at the Downing Centre Local Court on Monday, sternly telling the ex MAFS groom to “stop doing that”.
“It’s the second time the court has let you off,” the magistrate said.
Sultan then left the court yelling “Victory! Common sense prevails! Nasser wins … I can go back onto the road”.
The self-described celebrity admitted he should heed the Magistrate’s warning.
“But it’s hard because I’ve got three, four functions a week. My phone (a Nokia 3303) just doesn’t get Uber,” he said.
“Do you weigh up a great party, with free things, and hot people, or do you worry about someone pulling you over? You worry about the party!”
The Redfern resident said he was in a hurry as he was “off to the Oscars”, but when asked if he was flying to Los Angeles for the red carpet event he replied: “no, it’s at Hoyts, Broadway.”
While in court, Sultan’s barrister apologised for his client who was dressed in sneakers and jeans while chewing gum and playing on his phone.
“At first sight he looks casual, but no disrespect to the court,” Mr Flynn said.
Sultan later said he “didn’t wanna go over the top” and instead opted to save his sartorial flair for the Academy Awards ceremony.
“I’ll go home now and get all dolled up. I’m going to wear white pants, with a polka dot shirt and a cravat with my name on it,” he said.
“And I’m thinking whether I take a man or take a woman — I’m not sure yet.”
Sultan, a former music promoter, appeared in season 5 of Married At First Sight where he was paired with contestant Gabrielle Bartlett.
But the relationship soon fell apart with Sultan spotted cosying up to a younger man in April.
He was later photographed kissing another woman on a PDA-packed date in September.
Sultan said the show has “destroyed” his love life but he’s fielding offers from a mass of suitors of both genders.
“I’ll be the guest at mardi gras this year, I was last year,” he said.
While leaving the court Sultan asked photographers to make him look taller because “girls like tall men, and abs.”
“Boys don’t care … I’m seasonal darling,” he said.
