Loss of control the cause of Jordan Jackson Kiley’s fatal crash, coroner finds

Inexperience was behind the death of a young Hobart motorcyclist, a coroner has found.

A YOUNG motorcyclist who died in a crash at Rosetta in March last year appears to have lost control of his bike while negotiating a sweeping turn, a coroner has found.

In her findings into the death of Jordan Jackson Kiley, Coroner Olilvia McTaggart said the 17-year-old had died from blunt injuries to the head, neck and chest.

Jordan obtained his learner’s permit in January 2019.

He was involved in three crashes between then and his death in a single-vehicle crash three months later.

“In each instance the crashes only involved Jordan and were the result of driver error; they do not appear to have been caused by the involvement of any other persons or external factors,” Ms McTaggart said.

“In each instance Jordan told his mother that he had lost control of his motorcycle,” she said.

The inquest heard the young rider had told his mother that he learnt from his crashes and was focused on becoming a more experienced rider.

He would go for rides on different types of roads and terrains to gain experience and watch YouTube videos on how to be a safer rider.

“Despite these efforts, Jordan remained an inexperienced rider who struggled to safely control his motorcycle. Although it is quite possible that Jordan was travelling at a higher speed than the speed limit before his crash, the clear evidence from the witnesses observing him indicates that the main contributing factor in the crash was Jordan’s inability to safely control the motorcycle,” Ms McTaggart said.

He was travelling from Claremont College in the direction of his home in Glenorchy at the time of the fatal accident.
