A top barrister who helped lead the coronial inquest into the execution of police informer Terry Hodson has been chosen to spearhead the Lawyer X royal commission.

The Herald Sun can reveal Chris Winneke, QC, will be counsel assisting the royal commission into the unprecedented legal scandal.

The leading lawyer, who was appointed as a silk in 2015, has been charged with leading the commission’s investigation into Victoria Police’s use of Lawyer X as a gangland informer in scores of high-profile criminal cases.

He had previously been counsel assisting for the inquest into the murder of Hodson and his wife Christine, which wrapped up in 2015 and was unable to identify the killer.

Mr Winneke will be joined as counsel assisting by Andrew Woods and Megan Tittensor.

Law firm Holding Redlich will be the solicitors assisting the commission.

Hearings are not expected to begin for several more weeks, as commissioners Margaret McMurdo and Malcolm Hyde continue to work through how the commission will operate.

Former Victoria Police chief commissioners Simon Overland and Christine Nixon are among the high-profile witnesses likely to be called to face the inquiry, which the Andrews Government wants to see held in public as much as possible.

The commission is required to deliver its first report to the government by July 1.
