The party on Tuesday releases its policy for the Territory’s Resources, Mining and Petroleum industries.

Primary Industry and Resources Minister Paul Kirby said they would be building on work they had done in the sector over recent years.

If re-elected on August 22, Territory Labor has said it would continue the government’s Resourcing the Territory initiative of $26m over four years (2018-2022), and implement the remaining recommendations of the Pepper Inquiry to ensure risks associated with an onshore petroleum industry are minimised.

Labor also promised to support the growth of a “safe, competitive and sustainable” resources industry.

Mr Kirby said the Territory set a new record for the value of mineral production in the last financial year with a total of $4.92bn. The NT’s mineral exploration in the 2018/19 calendar year totalled $131.9m — up 21 per cent on the previous year.

“The last three financial years have seen record investment in exploration and record mineral production as a result of our $26m Resourcing the Territory initiative,” Mr Kirby said.
