Climate change myths: "But it's been hot before!"

THE first tropical cyclone to develop in Australian waters this season will be named Imogen.

However, if a cyclone develops in international waters and is named by another jurisdiction, it will retain its foreign name.

Names of new tropical cyclones are selected according to a list with the Bureau of Meteorology, with names chosen in alphabetical sequence, alternating between male and female names.

If a particular tropical cyclone has had a significant impact, that name is usually retired from the list and a replacement name is selected.

When the list is exhausted, the Bureau of Meteorology returns to the start of the list.
