Peter Dutton gets grilled by 12-year-old boy

A tiny intruder pushed his way through the press pack to speak with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton on the federal election campaign trail as he pulled into a petrol station in the seat of Macnamara.

Twelve-year-old Sammy had some pressing questions for the Liberal Leader as he walked up to the car window.

“Hi Peter,” he said.

“What’s your middle name?”

“Where’s Albanese?” he asked.

“Nowhere to be seen,” Mr Dutton responded.

But the primary school student, who then asked if he was in fact speaking to Peter Dutton, wasn’t quite finished.

“How old are you?” he asked, with Mr Dutton telling him he was 54.

The pair also covered footy, social media and school, before the Liberal Leader told him “you’ll be on TV tonight - you’ll be a superstar”.

The boy’s audience with Mr Dutton comes as Victorian Opposition Leader Brad Battin joined him on the campaign trail for the first time.

The duo visited the ultra-marginal seat of Macnamara in Melbourne’s southeast, alongside Liberal candidate, Benson Saulo, and Goldstein candidate Tim Wilson.

Mr Dutton rolled into a petrol station in Caulfield in a Tim Wilson campaign van to fill up at the bowser to promote the Coalition’s pledge to cut the fuel excise.

The suburban seat is home to the second largest Jewish population in the country and is where the Adass Israel Synagogue, which was firebombed in December, is located.

Incumbent Labor MP Josh Burns easily won the seat in 2022 thanks to Greens preferences.

However, Mr Burns is fearing thousands of Jewish voters - furious with Labor over soaring antisemitism - will jump ship to the Liberals, reducing his primary and potentially handing the seat to the Greens.

Under major pressure to preference the Liberals above the Greens, Mr Burns is expected to run an open ticket.

Local Liberal Senator James Paterson said the people of Macnamara deserved to know if they

are “at risk” of having a representative for the next three years whose party has “vilified Jewish Australians and downplayed the terrible events on 7 October”.

“At the eleventh hour, one can only hope Josh Burns’ conscience will compel him to do the right thing and put the antisemitic extreme Greens last,” he said.

“It is time for Josh Burns and Labor to finally put this saga to bed.”
