Labor promises $44m to stem Brownhill Creek flood risk

THE Opposition says it would fight flooding of the Brownhill and Keswick creeks under a $44 million mitigation plan.

THE Opposition says it would fight flooding of the Brownhill and Keswick creeks under a $44 million mitigation plan.

Councils including West Torrens, Unley, Burnside, Mitcham and Adelaide City have been trying to work out how to protect up to 7000 homes that are vulnerable when the creeks flood.

Labor says it has a plan to protect local areas, saying it is estimated a major flood would cause up to $122 million damage and affect at least 2000 homes.

The $44 million is about a third of the total cost.

The plan includes “detention basins”, diverting the water flow, and upgrading the creeks.

“Labor’s commitment will help prevent future damage, saving money and residents’ houses,” Adelaide MP Kate Ellis said.

“A major flood could also impact Adelaide Airport and important public infrastructure including road and rail transport across the catchment.

“This makes the flood works essential going into the future, as they will prevent further costly flood damage in the long run.”
