Anthony Albanese has spectacularly backtracked on an admission that he fell off a stage in the first week of the election campaign just hours after making the remarks.
Speaking at a WA leadership breakfast on Thursday - where he also almost tripped - the Prime Minister revealed that “probably falling off the stage” was the worst moment of the campaign so far.
But Mr Albanese later became shirty during a press conference, where he was grilled about the awkward incident.
“It was a joke,” Mr Albanese said. “Chill out ... I didn’t fall.”
The prickly exchange didn’t end there, with another reporter probing why it was so important to him to say that he “stepped off the stage”.
“I have no idea why you are interested in it compared with the big picture,” Mr Albanese said.
Reminded that in 2022 he vowed he would front up when he got things wrong - remarks that have prompted the Opposition to run attack ads accusing him of lying - Mr Albanese retorted saying it said “something about their character”.
“I didn’t fall over on my backside. I stumbled. That’s what happened,” he said.
“I laughed about it at the time. I laughed about it. It’s no big deal.”
Mr Albanese had been attempting to pose for a group photo on a stage at a Mining and Energy Union conference in the Hunter Valley when he had the stack earlier this month.
He later told the ABC that he “stepped back one step”.
“I didn’t fall off the stage … Just one leg went down,” Mr Albanese said.
