Scott Morrison's miracle election victory

Bill Shorten is reportedly throwing his support behind Tanya Plibersek as the party's next leader, after his shock election loss.

The Australian is reporting that "several" senior sources inside the party have indicated Mr Shorten has voiced his support for Ms Plibersek.

But she is yet to confirm she is running for the top job.

Ms Plibersek – who holds the seat of Sydney – has not publicly confirmed she is running, but has reportedly met with key ALP figures about a potential ticket.

The news came as seats remain still too close to call. And while the Coalition could potentially form a majority, they could also be forced to negotiate a minority government with the crossbench.

The electorates of Boothby in South Australia, Chisholm in Victoria,  Macquarie and Wentworth in NSW, Lilley in Queensland and Swan and Cowan in WA are extremely close, and counting is continuing.

The Coalition needs 76 seats to win an outright majority, or 77 seats to have a majority and one of their own MPs as the Speaker.
