THE brother of late actor Paul Walker will pitch Queensland as a possible location for the ninth Fast and the Furious film as he works to convince Vin Diesel to bring the franchise Down Under.
The 28-year-old actor Cody Walker was in Brisbane for a charity event yesterday, and will soon meet with the star of the franchise in the US, where he will use Queensland’s investment in Hollywood movies to convince him to bring the franchise to Australia.
The latest instalment, The Fate of the Furious, surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to smash the record for global box office takings on its opening weekend, earning $US532.5 million ($701.5 million).
“Filming the next movie in Australia is something I seriously want to see happen,” Walker said.
“I want to convey to (Vin Diesel) really how special that would be because the fans down here are so loyal to the franchise, and I think it’s time you guys get some love.”
The Queensland Government has invested an additional $30 million over four years in a bid to attract large-scale productions to Queensland, including the latest Pirates of the Caribbean and Thor films shot on the Gold Coast last year.
Walker was impressed by the investment, saying the Gold Coast “really would be a good fit” for the Fast and Furious franchise, which would involve at least two more films.
The eighth film is the first without breakout star Paul Walker, who died in a car accident in 2013, midway through filming the seventh movie.
Cody stepped in to complete the film on his brother’s behalf using CGI, but he hopes to rejoin the franchise as a new character in the next film.
He is in Australia to host a series of charity events to raise funds for Paul’s charity Reach Out Worldwide, which sends medical teams all over the world after disasters.
Yesterday he appeared at a car show, cocktail party and movie screening.
