DEPUTY Prime Minister Michael McCormack was the surprise guest of honour at the Country Liberal Party’s election campaign launch in Darwin today.
Mr McCormack addressed the party faithful alongside Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro at a packed Wharf One on the Darwin waterfront, saying the assembled candidates had a “blueprint for the future” to safeguard “jobs, safety and opportunity”.

Ms Finocchiaro said despite effectively being the CLP’s only serving MLA due to the impending retirement of Member for Daly Gary Higgins, she was confident of forming a majority government after the election.
“The CLP is resilient and strong and it has shown through our exceptional candidates that we have what it takes to get the job done,” she said.
My candidates and I are skin in the game Territorians who are prepared to roll up their sleeves and get the job done.
“I can assure Territorians that the CLP is committed to forming majority government on the 22nd of August and we look forward to implementing our policies and delivering our plan.”
Mr McCormack defended the “diversified” group of candidates “from the far corners of the NT”, despite the notable lack of Indigenous representation outside of candidate for Arafura, Gibson Farmer Illortaminni and Gwoja candidate Phillip Alice.
Mr McCormack said the candidates were “representative of their communities”.

“The communities have put these people forward, these people have also put their hand up for preselection for public office — there’s no tougher thing in life than to put your hand up to represent your community,” he said.
“Every member here will put Indigenous people, non-Indigenous people, people from the NT, first and foremost in everything they do.”
