Darwin RSL reveal plans for their new Esplanade proposal

A GROUND floor cafe, second storey bar and a virtual reality experience have been included in the Darwin RSL’s first concept plans of their Esplanade proposal.
Darwin RSL president Steve Gloster said the clubhouse would pay homage to the Bombing of Darwin as well as Cyclone Tracy as the two biggest events in the Territory’s history.
“With this development proposal we are reinventing the venue to be a nation-leading family-focused RSL club with some of the best views in the country overlooking our prestigious harbour with its prominent military history,” he said.
“Visitors to the Darwin RSL club will be able to don Virtual Reality googles and witness over the harbour what occurred during the bombing of Darwin, which was the largest attacks ever mounted by a foreign power against Australia.
“What could be better than developing a signature meeting place overlooking the harbour area of where the Defence of Darwin happened.”
The downstairs cafe would run from 7.30am-7pm while the RSL club would run from 10am-11pm.
Mr Gloster said there were also considerations for neighbouring organisations and stakeholders such as the Deckchair cinema, who have continually opposed the concept of an Esplanade venue.
“We are currently engaging acoustic engineering services to evaluate and provide advice around how sound emissions for the RSL club remain minimal to coexist and complement other tourist attractions in the area such as the Deckchair Cinema that operates for 5 months of the year at night-time only,” he said.
