Police respond to youths causing trouble on northern beaches

A stern warning from a senior police officer to the parents of children running amok on Sydney’s northern beaches has fallen on deaf ears.

About midnight on Friday, police were called to Collaroy, near the Surf Life Saving Club, after a punch-up involving several young men.

Officers had to chase one teenager through a park before tackling him to the ground and handcuffing him.

Two other teens attempted to board a bus on Pittwater Road but the driver called police.

Officers then had to board the bus and pull the teenagers, who made rude gestures to a photographer at the scene, off.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station for questioning but released without charge, a police spokesman confirmed.

Meanwhile, two other men — a 20-year-old and a 21-year-old — were treated by paramedics for facial injuries, including a bloodied nose.

The late night melee comes after the area’s top cop — Superintendent Dave Darcy — issued an extraordinary edict to local parents, urging them to pull their kids into line.

In a letter to parents last week, Supt Darcy said there had been an extraordinary deterioration in the behaviour of young people as young as 13 in the area.

“I’m also surprised at the freedom enjoyed, particularly by the 13 and 14-year-olds who are roaming our streets at midnight under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” he wrote.

“It’s behaviour that’s escalated from the problematic to, in some cases, the criminal.”
