Cate Blanchett leads Aussie charge at Golden Globes, wins best actress in a drama movie

Aussie actress Cate Blanchett has scored a Golden Globe for her role in Tár, as The Fabelmans and Banshees of Inisherin bag multiple awards.

Margot Robbie’s Chanel gown took 750 hours to make.

And while the Babylon star owned the 80th Golden Globes red carpet, her Australian film making alumni Baz Luhrmann and Cate Blanchett were left to smash the awards proper.

Robbie, 32, was overlooked for best supporting actress in a musical or comedy, but Blanchett and Luhrmann combined to deliver one of Australia’s strongest showings at the glitzy Hollywood event.

Blanchett cemented herself as a favourite of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), who vote on the awards, with her fourth Golden Globe.

The 53-year-old actor had been the absolute frontrunner for best actress in a drama for her tour de force performance as the titular character in the thriller Tár.

And while work commitments in the UK prevented her from attending, she now joins Meryl Streep, Ingrid Bergman and Jane Fonda as the most awarded actress in the category with three wins.

Baz Luhrman’s epic biopic Elvis collected one win from three nominations, with adopted Aussie Austin Butler nabbing best actor drama (movie) over the more highly fancied Brendan Fraser.

“Oh man all my words are leaving me, I’m just so grateful right now to be in a room full of my heroes – Brad (Pitt) I love you,” Butler said, with traces of Elvis Presley’s distinctive drawl still present.

“I cannot believe I’m here right now.”

He paid tribute to the “bold visionary filmmaker” director Luhrmann.

“You allowed me to take risks, Baz Luhrmann I love you thank you for believing in me, so grateful to you,” Butler said, before thanking the Presley family for trusting him and opening up their home to him.

“Priscilla, Lisa-Marie – I love you forever.”

Hugh Jackman, who was nominated alongside Butler, went home empty-handed for his role in drama The Son, while Elizabeth Debicki was overlooked for her outstanding performance as Princess Diana in The Crown.

WILL SMITH TARGET OF JOKES

Comedian host Jerrod Carmichael took a swing at Will Smith during the ceremony, presenting him with a novelty award.

“While we were on commercial we actually presented Will Smith with the Rock Hudson award for best portrayal of masculinity on television,” he joked as the packed ballroom laughed with him.

“Please give it up for Will Smith you guys.”

The actor was also a feature of Eddi Murphy’s acceptance speech for his Cecil B. DeMille LifeTime achievement award.

“I’ve followed this my whole career. There are three things you should do – Pay your taxes, mind your own business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f….g mouth,” he said.

BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, THE FABELMANS WIN MULTIPLE AWARDS

The Banshees of Inisherin took home another Golden Globe, to win the best comedy or musical film.

It was its third globe from eight nominations, after Colin Farrell won best actor for his role in the film and Martin McDonough best screenplay.

Movie director Quentin Tarantino presented the final Golden Globe for the awards ceremony to The Fabelmans, for best drama movie.

Steven Spielberg beat the highly fancied Elvis, and box office blockbusters Maverick: Top Gun, Avatar for his autobiographical story.

“My office is on the Universal lot and I want to stay on the Universal lot, I want to not be the reason this goes in to the 11.30 news”, he said keeping his second acceptance speech rather brief.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON WINS BEST TV DRAMA

The unprecedented weather and flooding meant that veteran Kevin Costner was unable to be at the Beverly Hilton to accept his surprise win for his best actor TV drama portrayal of Yellowstone patriarch. Most pundits had tipped Bob Odenkirk to win for his last series of Better Call Saul.

Abbott Elementary collected its third globe of the night for best TV comedy or musical series.

The series led among television nominees going into the event with five nods, beating The Bear, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, and Wednesday in the top category.

While, Foxtel and Binge’s Games of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon took out the drama category for its debut season.

“As you can tell we didn’t think we were going to win so I didn’t get ready,” co-creator Ryan Condal said, of his less-than-formal attire, as Australian actress Milly Alcock joined him on stage.

Eddie Murphy had some words of wisdom for the new and upcoming artists in the room as he accepted the Cecil B. DeMille LifeTime achievement award from actors and his close friends Jamie-Lee Curtis and Tracey Morgan.

“There is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind,” he said.

“I’ve followed this my whole career. There are three things you should do – Pay your taxes, mind your own business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f….g mouth.”

The Golden Globe winner kept his speech short saying that after 46 years in showbusiness, he could keep the thank yous going on forever.

Foxtel’s The White Lotus won the Golden Globe for the best television limited series.

The series was one of the most talked-about shows last year, with December’s thrilling season finale confirming or disproving countless fan theories.

White Lotus creator Mike White tearfully accepted the award for his social satire.

“I was going to do the speech in Italian but I’m too drunk,” he said. “There‘s no food”.

He went on to rub it into all those passed on the show.

Deep in the process of creating a new musical, Amanda Seyfried was unable to accept her best actress in a limited series or TV movie award for her stunning turn as Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout, completing her sweep on the TV circuit awards.

Meanwhile, Evan Peters was always going to win best actor in a limited series or TV movie for playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

“I want to thank my family and friends who picked me up when I fell and got me to the finish lines,” he said.

Peters said the show was “a difficult one to make, a difficult one to watch, but I sincerely hope some good came out of it”, and thanked those who watched it.

Paul Walter Hauser for his role in Black Bird was a surprise win for supporting actor in a limited series or TV movie.

“Holy Cow I won’t get the time like Spielberg and the other guys got”, he said.

COOLIDGE BREAKS DOWN IN SPEECH

Jennifer Coolidge, in her first win from two nominations for her role in White Lotus, broke down as she accepted her globe for supporting actress in a limited series or TV movie.

“Thank you so much wow,” she exclaimed, putting the statuette down - joking she didn’t workout and didn’t have the strength to hold onto it.

“I just want to say thank you to five people that kept me going for 20 years with little jobs.

“Ryan Murphy you were one of them.” She continued, joking that he was the only one.

Coolidge also thanked Mike White, of The White Lotus, for the opportunity in the show and joked about it giving her neighbours a chance to remember her once again.

SPIELBERG BEATS BAZ TO WIN

Earlier, legendary Hollywood Stephen Spielberg, pipped Aussie Baz Luhrmann at the post, for best director with his semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans.

“I always say If I prepare something, it will jinx it so I never prepare anything.

“But I’m so happy.”

Spielberg said he had been hiding from this story for years, but had “told it in part and parcels through most of his films” from ET to Close Encounters. Everyone from his wife Kate Capshaw to fellow producers had been encouraging him for years.

“In Covid I didn’t know if anyone would get to tell stories again and I thought at 74 years old ‘you better do it now’.”

Penn, a multiple Oscar winner, loaned his Academy Award to Ukraine’s President Zelensky during a visit to Kyiv under one condition; that he return it to the actor when the war ends.

Penn was forced to flee Ukraine while making a documentary on the war.

RYAN MURPHY DEVOTES SPEECH TO OTHERS

Pose star Billy Porter presented the Carol Burnett Award to his long-time mentor and friend Ryan Murphy.

“There aren’t enough words in the English language to convey what you mean to me,” he said, explaining it was Murphy who encouraged him to hold on when Hollywood wasn’t having all of “this balc joy”.

“Fast forward 16 years – Pose came.

“I’m humbled to be up here in proxy for all the people whose lives you’ve touched and changed for the better,” Porter said.

The five-time Golden Globe nominee and one-time winner, screenwriter, producer and director, Ryan Murphy was honoured for his prolific work including The People v OJ Simpson which earned Murphy 10 Emmy Awards, The Assassination of Gianni Versace won two Golden Globes, and more recently he’s written a stack of series for Netflix including Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, starring Evan Peters and Niecey Nash-Betts, which received four Golden Globes nominations.

He took the opportunity to afford Pose’s MJ Rodrigues the standing ovation she deserved for her win last year in best drama TV.

“A year ago the awards weren’t televised – MJ became the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe. I thought ‘How I would have loved for MJ to be on stage getting the standing ovation for making history’.”

Murphy devoted much of his speech to other people.

“Tonight’s award made me reflect on what a lifetime achievement is – you get there by being fearless like these five people,” Murphy said, heaping praise on Rodrigues and gay actors Billy Porter, Niecy Nash, Matt Bomer and Jeremy Pope

“It’s hard being an LGBQTIA kid in America, for those kids I offer up MJ, Billy, and Niecy and Matt and Jeremy as objects of possibility, use them as your north stars.”

The lifetime achievement award is the equivalent of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, a Golden Globes award typically given to actors and directors for unprecedented contributions to the television industry.

Previous honorees include Burnett, Ellen Degeneres and Norman Lear.

‘EVIS IS AN ICON, REBEL’: NAMED BEST ACTOR FOR BAZ LUHRMANN FILM

Baz Luhrmann’s epic Elvis took home its first Globe with Austin Butler scooping the award for best actor in a drama movie over the more highly fancied Brendan Fraser.

“Oh man all my words are leaving me, just so grateful right now, in a room full of my heros – Brad (Pitt) I love you,” Butler said, with traces of Elvis Presley’s distinctive drawl still present.

“I cannot believe I’m here right now.”

“You allowed me to take risks, Baz Luhrmann I love you thank you for believing in me, so grateful to you,” Butler said, before thanking the Presley family - Priscilla and Lisa - for trusting him and opening up their home to him.

He also acknowledged the work of his fellow nominees: “You have turned in the most beautiful profound work”.

Zendaya – who was absent from the ceremony, it was suggested she was working, not snubbing the HFPA – took her first Golden Globe for actress in a drama TV series for her role in Euphoria.

Julia Garner was awarded for her last turn as Ruth Langmore in Ozark, meaning Aussie Elizabeth Debicki lost for her stunning performance as Princess Diana in The Crown.

“I’m just so overwhelmed,” Garner said. “I’m just so grateful to be here with you.”

Carmichael got edgier as the ceremony went on, appearing on stage at one pretending to be holding Tom Cruise’s three returned golden globes.

“Look maybe we take the three things and swap them for the safe return of Shelley Miscavige.”

Carmichael was referring to Michelle Miscavige - a member of the Church of Scientology, married to Scientology leader David Miscavige who was last seen in public in August 2007.

Since her withdrawal from public appearances, she has been the subject of speculation and enquiries regarding her whereabouts and wellbeing

‘INCREDIBLE FIGHT TO GET ME HERE’

It comes after Michelle Yeoh told the band playing her offstage to “shut up”, as she gave her acceptance speech for the best performance in a musical or comedy movie.

“Forty years. Not letting go of this,” she said.

“It’s been an amazing journey and an incredible fight to get me here.”

She reflected on her first days in the US and thanked people for wanting to tell the story of an immigrant in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Yeoh’s award is the second for the ceremony, and makes her the second Asian actress ever to win after Awkwafina for “The Farewell”.

As expected, Colin Farrell took home his second globe for his performance in the Globes most awarded film The Banshees of Inisherin.

Before accepting his best actor movie (musical or comedy) award, he lavished praise on Ana de Armas for her role in Blonde the dark look at Marilyn Monroe .

“It totally f…. me up.”

And then he said he was overwhelmed by the success of his own movie: “So horrified by what has happened to the Banshees in the last couple of months - in a great way.”

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio also won the award for best animation.

‘I LOVE ACTING’

Relative newcomer Quinta Brunson was a slight surprise, taking home the best TV Actress in a comedy or musical for her role in Abbott Elementary, above the more fancied Selena Gomez and Jean Smart.

“Let me get past my family text messaging,” she said as she read her thank you speech from her phone.

She thanked those who believed in the show and made it possible and for supporting her “vision”.

Brunson’s win is the second for the hit TV series of the awards ceremony.

With Jason Sudeikis finally out of the running for Ted Lasso, Jeremy Allen White in his first nomination took home his first Globe for best performance in a comedy or musical (TV) for The Bear.

“Man, um, shit, I am in awe of you (my fellow nominees), you are all legends, it’s an honour just to have my name next to yours,” Allen White said.

“ I love the Bear, I love Carmy.

“I love acting”

‘I CAN’T DO IT ... I’LL BREAK MY SKULL’

Presenter Jennifer Coolidge joked about getting the call up to the Globes, saying she had an anxiety attack after accepting and called back with a variety of excuses to get out of the job – from tripping over and pronunciation of names.

“There’s no way that I’ll make it all the way from the curtain to the podium without breaking my skull, I can’t do it,” she said, making a joke about considering wearing crocs.

She then awarded “the Oscar” to newcomer Tyler James Williams for his role in the five-times nominated Abbott Elementary.

“Wow – the magnitude of this moment is not lost on me,” he said.

“I pray this a win for Gregory Eddie (his Abbott Elementary character who has autism) for him and his story.”

‘WE MADE HISTORY WITH THIS AWARD’

The first Golden Globe winners have been announced with Ke Huy Quan and Angela Bassett as the best supporting actor and actress in a movie.

Ke Huy Quan thanked director Stephen Spielberg as he accepted his globe for best supporting actor in a movie for his first opportunity in Indiana Jones, as 30 years later he’s won his first Globe for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

“Thank you thank you so much, I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” he said in an emotional acceptance speech.

“Everything that has happened since has been unbelievable.”

Angela Bassett was nervous as she accepted her award for best supporting actress for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

It was her second Globe, she made history in 1994 the first, and still the only Black woman ever to win best actress (comedy or musical).

“I got to find my words. I’m so nervous,” she said.

“In January 27 1994, I accepted a golden globe for What’s Love Got to do with it.

“And I stand here today grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

“We made history with this nomination and this award.”

Bassett also remembered the late Chadwick Boseman, and thanked the Marvel fans for the love.

“Weeping may come in the evening, but joy comes in the morning. We embarked on this journey together. With love, we mourned, we loved, we healed and we were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman,” she said.

“We have joy in knowing that with this historic ‘Black Panther’ series, it is part of his legacy he helped lead us to, we showed the world what Black unity, leadership and love looks like beyond, behind and in front of the camera.”

‘I’M HERE BECAUSE I’M BLACK’

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael opened the 80th Golden Globes by repeatedly asking the crowd to be quiet – then making a crack at the show itself.

The 35-year-old entertainer, following in the footsteps of Ricky Gervais, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey took aim at the best and most talented stars across film and television as the awards ceremony returned to TV.

Carmichael said he was appointed the host because he was “black”, on the back of allegations the Golden Globes was racist.

He didn’t hold back as he opened the 80th Golden Globes

“I’m here because I’m black, I’ll catch everyone in the room up,” he joked, reminding the room of the controversies of the few years.

“One minute you’re making mint tea at home next you’re invited to be the black face of an embattled organization.”

Sitting on the steps of the stage he recounted his moral dilemma at accepting to host the Globes.

“I was really proud of that decision until got an email that the head of HFPA wanted to have a one on sitdown with me, I know a tap when I hear a trap … I thought it went away and then it came back,” Carmichael said.

“(If I don’t do this) what are they going to do Fire me? I’m the first black host in 79 years …

“Regardless of the past this is an evening where we get to celebrate and I'm happy you all are here.”
