Police believe a driver’s headlong rush the wrong way on Sydney’s M5 motorway was a disgraceful stunt by hoons so they could post a video on social media.

Footage of the car driving at high speed toward oncoming traffic on the M5 late Sunday night appeared to have been filmed from a car following on the right side of the road and was posted online about one hour after it happened.

In the video, the sedan can be seen missing head-on collisions with other cars and trucks by just centimetres as it tore along the breakdown lane.

Peitje Cornewal said she was driving eastbound on the motorway at about 10.15pm when a car coming toward her almost struck her near the Liverpool off-ramp in Sydney’s southwest.

“(It) was pretty scary … I just saw the car and headlights and kind of thought ‘what the...?’,” Ms Cornewal told The Daily Telegraph.

The car was “veering in and out” of traffic, she said. “I’m just glad no one was hurt,” she said.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Chief Inspector Phil Brooks said police were furious at the driver going the wrong way, but also at the motorist who filmed the wild ride from a car on the correct side of the road.

“These two drivers probably think they’re pretty funny but they’re not,” Insp Brooks said.

“It appears to be a social media stunt. This is a number of road users taking risks to try and make themselves popular on Facebook. Well it’s failed, not even the people on Facebook accept this behaviour.”

He said the driver entered the motorway via the Henry Lawson Drive exit ramp, drove directly against traffic for a period before doing a U-turn and driving in the right direction.

“The outcome of this could have been quite catastrophic,” Insp Brooks said.

Highway patrol officers would trawl video from the highway’s camera system and any dashcam footage submitted by the public.

“(We’re) also looking at local CCTV cameras from petrol stations and other businesses all in the hope that we can identify this driver and prosecute this person and get him off our roads,” Insp Brooks said.

A number of excited voices and music can be heard in the background of the video, which was published on the Auburn 2144 Facebook page at 11.30pm on Sunday.

In an unrelated incident, a 20-year-old man was clocked travelling 172km/h in a Nissan 200SX on the M5 at Moorebank at 11.15pm on Sunday.

The P-plater was charged with multiple offences and ordered to front court on January 30.
