AN outback-themed restaurant in the heart of Cairns city has closed, with the landlord in the process of taking back possession of the premises.

In the past week, hungry tourists have been unable to head into Outback Jacks Bar and Grill on Abbott St, known for its flame-grilled steaks and Top End croc ribs.

A sign stuck to the window informs visitors that “the landlord has re-entered and taken possession of these premises”.

The building was snapped up by Phuong Nguyen in 2012 for $3 million and has operated as Outback Jacks since 2009.

Outback Jacks head office declined to comment on the restaurant’s closure.

But the Outback Jacks Bar and Grill website shows the Cairns location with the description “temporarily closed”.

Another franchise in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast is listed as closed and one in North Lakes north of Brisbane is set to open soon, according to the website.

Tu Phan of the neighbouring restaurant Rendezvous-Du-Vietnam said the building’s owner, Mr Nguyen was forced to take action against the tenants.

Cairns-based law firm the Law Office is handling the repossession.

Company partner Anthony Lagois told the Cairns Post he was bound by confidentially and could not comment.

CBRE Cairns managing director Danny Betros said a site such as the one formerly occupied by Outback Jacks commanded a “very high” rent.

“The problem with those restaurants is first of all they cover a big area and come with big overheads,” he said.

“And it’s not just the rent, you would be amazed at how many businesses are struggling because of Ergon.

“They have a lot or refrigeration and cooking gear, you have insurance and wages. All these overheads make it really hard for small business.”

It is unknown if the popular business will reopen.
