THE ribbon has been cut on a $60 million redevelopment at Cairns Central Shopping Centre with new stores, new food precinct, new jobs and a special present for the kids.
A stylish new food precinct was launched at the shopping centre on Tuesday with Lendlease head of retail David McNamara said today revealing new stores and a new playground would open in 2021.
He said the project, set to create 125 new retail jobs and 70 construction jobs, was an exciting milestone for a centre that opened in 1997.

“There’s everything from Asian street foods to deli-style options as well as baked goods, and early February the much anticipated new Woolworths and BWS and a great new playground and expanded fashion, beauty, food and convenience stores,” he said.
“This will cement this destination as the largest and leading shopping destination in tropical Far North Queensland.
“This $60 million redevelopment reflects the great confidence that Lendlease has in the region, as well as our owners.
“We’ve delivered on our vision to give customers exceptional shopping experiences that reflect Cairns’ vibrant and diverse community.”
Cairns MP Michael Healy said more than 11 million shoppers came through the doors annually, with the centre employing a thousand casual, part-time and full-time workers.
“The work at Cairns Central had contributed to helping the city as we move through the global COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
Shoppers descended on the new food precinct which features Excel Fresh, Rise and Bake, Hong Kong Street and Hero Sushi and other restaurants.
Maxine Cherry of Trinity Beach said the modern look was refreshing.
“I love it, the lighting is great and it’s a very modern look,” she said.
Eileen Kenny of Brinsmead said it was a new destination to meet friends.
“It’s somewhere different, it is fresh and new, light and inviting,” she said.
Natasha O’Donoughue of Gordonvale was equally pleased.
“I think it’s amazing, it is fresh and new, a nice change,” she said.
Myer has had a complete refurbishment and is now a single level layout in a larger footprint on the ground floor.
