Big expansion planned for Townsville residential estate

A big masterplanned community in Townsville is set to get even bigger.

A BIG masterplanned community at Mount Low is set to get even bigger with its developer lodging a development application to create 146 residential lots.

Local development company Maidment Group lodged the proposal with Townsville City Council.

It includes five more stages to the residential estate and two public parks.

Townsville Acting Mayor and Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the application was another sign of increasing economic activity in our city.

“This application will be judged on its merits but it’s a great sign to have proposals of this size and scale being submitted to council for a decision,” Cr Walker said.

“This proposed development shows major companies such as Maidment have growing confidence in our city’s economic recovery.

“This increasing confidence in our city’s economy is helping to provide more local job opportunities right across our community.

“Major developments like this are important for our economy because they provide jobs for locals from tradespeople to real estate agents.”

Cr Walker said the area was one of Townsville’s fastest growing suburbs.

“Mount Low in the Northern Beaches is a popular area for families and it’s exciting to see that there are plans to expand the suburb,” Cr Walker said.

Sanctum is expected to be one of the region’s largest master planned communities, housing

more than 4800 families when complete.

Maidment Group holds about 4500 approved residential lots in masterplanned communities in Townsville at Mount Low, the Bohle Plains and Jensen, and has been a market leader in the introduction of fibre-optic connections, energy efficiency and solar system installations.

It is also planning a luxury $50 million marine home and apartment project, Marina Residences, fronting Breakwater Marina off the Strand.

Maidment managing director Glen Maidment told the Bulletin last year the company, which has developed residential estates throughout Queensland, was focusing its interests on Townsville to take advantage of the growth being generated by big infrastructure projects.

Peak construction body Master Builders last month called for additional State grants to first homeowners in regional areas including Townsville to spur the housing market.
