An elderly Australian tourist has died after falling down a flight of stairs and smashing into a glass door while on holiday in Bali.

Indonesian news outlet Kumparan News named the woman as 77-year-old Rita Myrsel Lubin, who was on holiday with her son Louis Jean Francois Lubin.

Spokesperson Ketut Sukadi said Ms Lubin was walking through the Sindhu Beach Market on her way to the beach when she “lost her balance” about 12pm, local time.

“The victim passed a ladder leading to the beach via a path near the villa. The victim, who was looking for support to go down the ladder, lost her balance where the victim’s body hit a glass wall of a shop,” said Head of Public Relations for the Denpasar Police, AKP I Ketut Sukadi.

Ms Lubin suffered cuts on her back and arm in the fall, which happened on Sunday afternoon near the Sindhu Beach Market in Sanur, on the eastern flank of south Bali, the outlet reported.

“Locals in the market immediately helped the victim and tried to call the victim’s son in his villa.

“The victim’s son immediately rushed [her] into nearest hospital, Bali Mandara Hospital. However, the victim died as she lost too much blood.”

Ms Lubin’s 54-year-old son and a Sanur shop worker were unable to get her to the hospital in time and she died en route due to loss of blood.

Mr Lubin is trying to bring his mother’s body back to Australia.

The case was reported to the police by the shop worker.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian woman who died in Bali,” a DFAT spokesperson said.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time. Owing to our privacy obligations we cannot provide further comment.”
