Cairns Golf Club already had the top professional in the state but now they can boast Jason Roach is the leading professional across the thousands of golf clubs in Australia.
Far North local Roach was crowned the 2019 PGA National Club Professional of the Year on Tuesday evening at the Greg Norman Medal at RACV Royal Pines Resort Gold Coast.
The Greg Norman Medal is Australian golf’s most elite award with the evening a celebration of Australian golf and sees members of the professional golf circuit, corporate world and golf community gather to celebrate the achievements of both Tournament and Vocational PGA Professionals.
Matt Bolton, General Manager of Cairns Golf Club, says Roach’s prize is a testament to his hard work and dedication at the Woree-based course.
“The guys are doing a great job at the pro shop, it has come a long way, and it is a team effort as well as Jason’s work,” Bolton said.
“For a regional club to be recognised at a national level like this, it is a fantastic feather in Jason and the club’s cap.
“Jason grew up here as a junior, on the course, and long-term members have seen him grow up here at the club as a junior into the great pro he is these days.”
Bolton revealed that Roach kept it quiet leading into Tuesday’s awards that he was up for the top prize after he won the Professional of the Year at the Queensland Golf Industry Awards at the RACV Royal Pines Resort earlier this year.
“We did not realise he was up for another award,” Bolton said.
“But, once it was announced, we all starting getting all these text messages, and we quickly realised (laughs).”
It has been a big year for the Roach family with Jason’s brother Jake winning the 2019 Crathern Medal for the best and fairest footballer in the local AFL Cairns competition.
Jake is also one of the top all-rounders in the local Cricket Far North competition, as well as a Queensland representative.
The major award of the night went to Hannah Green, following her breakthrough season, which saw her recognised with the Greg Normal Medal for Australia’s best golfer.
The 22-year-old has a world ranking to match her age following a wire-to-wire women’s PGA Championship title and follow-up victory at the Portland Classic.
