Judge to oversee suppression review

A FORMER Supreme Court judge will review suppression laws in the wake of child pornography charges being laid against a Labor MP.

A FORMER Supreme Court judge will review suppression laws in the wake of a Labor MP's child pornography charges.

Attorney-General John Rau said he had enlisted Justice Brian Martin to run the review.

Mr Rau said the review would examine how current SA suppression laws compared with other states and if they needed any change.

The final recommendations will need to consider the impact of changes on the ability of an accused to receive a fair trial, protect the prosecution case and consider what measures would be needed to ensure someone named but found innocent had their reputation cleared.

The MP, scheduled to appear in court on Friday, cannot be named under an automatic suppression when charges were laid.
