Tourists from near and far will have one million reasons to hit the open road in the Northern Territory this Dry Season with a unique new competition launching.

In a bid to entice more local and interstate travellers to our slice of paradise, road trippers who visit and explore the NT between May and September 2024 can win $1 million in cash.

The prize is being offered by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia in partnership with the NT Government.

Eligible entrants include those who have stayed at a selected caravan park, visited a participating tourism experience, or attended a visitor information centre during the five-month window.

Entries along with the terms and conditions can be found online, and runner-up prizes include $10,000 cash and a $500 fuel voucher, or one of 19 fuel vouchers also valued at $500 each.

Chief Minister Eva Lawler said she hoped the initiative was as much a tourism boon as the Million Dollar Fish competition, which has led to at least $7.2 million in spending since 2015.

“There’s nowhere better in the world to do a road trip than the Territory, so get ready to make plans to get out and explore what makes the Territory great,” Ms Lawler said.

“My government will always do what we can to support industry and get the Territory moving.”

The NT Government estimates road tourists added $860 million to the economy last year, more than a quarter of the $3 billion overall value from tourism.

Caravan Industry Association chief executive Stuart Lamont described the Territory as “one of the great driving destinations in the world”.

“Offering historical, natural and Aboriginal experiences not found anywhere else on the planet, the Territory should be on every Australians bucket list to travel to, and encouraging Australians to escape the cold and visit the Territory this winter,” Mr Lamont said.

“Caravan and campers disperse like no other market, and we are keen to support the economies of communities’ right across the Territory through increased tourism visitation.”
