Fourteen lucky NT anglers have now been recorded as having reeled in a $10k barra in the latest Million Dollar Fish season.

The 14th fish, which was reeled in after swimming 90km from Bynoe Harbour to Buffalo Creek, was caught by Alan Carter on October 28.

The 58cm red-tagged barramundi was a shock catch for Mr Carter who had been out fishing about 10am with mates.

He dubbed the fish ‘Bert Big Bills’.

“We left about four in the morning, went down to Buffalo Creek for the turn of the tide,” Mr Carter said of his winning catch.

“I’ve fished there quite regularly, just sort of going on a Sunday, something to do – and along came Bert and he sacrificed himself.

“I was nearly going to let the poor bugger go, and then I thought ‘No, it’s a current tag’, so I kept it and put it on ice.”

There are now 85 red-tagged fish worth $10k in Territory waters, and 10 fish with a million-dollar tag for season 10 of the comp.

Each season the competition sees the red-tagged barramundi released in waterways around Darwin, Katherine, Kakadu, Arnhem Land and the Tiwi Islands.

Cancer Council NT receives $1k for every $10k tagged barra caught – which brings the total contribution to the charity this sea on to $14k.

Combined with the $1k donated to Cancer Council NT, this brings the total amount paid out since October 1 – when season 10 began – to $154k.

MDF season 10 runs until March 31 next year.

Registration is free and the competition is open to people aged 18 and older.

NT Major Events company acting CEO Trevor Cox said the start of the season had been “incredible”.

“This season has delivered unforgettable moments for fishos spotting the red tag as they reel in their barra,” he said.
