Veterans’ charity, Mates4Mates is empowering female veterans and Defence family members to advocate for their health and wellbeing this Women’s Health Week.
Hosting an event allowing women in the community to connect on Wednesday, the charity is encouraging women to speak up for their health.
The theme of this year’s Women’s Health Week is ‘Your voice, Your choice’.
A veteran herself, Mates4Mates regional manager Marcia Morgan said it can be challenging for female veterans or military family members to feel empowered to put their health first.
“After transitioning out of the Defence, navigating the civilian world and health systems can be challenging for some and can lead to people choosing not to speak up about their health concerns,” Ms Morgan said.
“Particularly for women who can sometimes be so focused on taking care of others, and juggling all the family’s activities, that they neglect their own health needs.”
Ms Morgan served in the Australian Army for 15 years before working as a youth worker.
She said Mates4Mates Townsville has created a safe space for women to connect and find support.
“It is important for veterans and family members to know that they can speak up around their health concerns, ask questions and disagree or seek another opinion to get the best outcome for their own health.”
Mates4Mates helps veterans and families find a way to reconnect and recover through mental health and physical rehabilitation services, skills and wellbeing programs, and social connection activities.
