Kareena White and her Manunda Hawks are ready to fly – and they don’t mind waiting an extra fortnight if it means they get to return to the footy field.
The AFL Cairns Women’s draw is yet to be released, but it’s understood to be a subject at a meeting later this week.
The men’s season is set to start on July 11 with the women’s team starting a week or two later. But regardless of when they get the green light, White said her Hawks will be ready to fly.
“It’s nice just to get back to footy training,” White said.
“I think that’s what COVID has taught us.
“People might play for competition, but a lot of people play for fun and the social aspects.
“It’s been really good to just hang out with our mates and play some footy, so if we start on July 11 or two weeks later, it doesn’t bother us.”
The Hawks have recently been in the headlines after the club was the only senior side yet to commit to the senior men’s competition.
But the women’s team, who reached the top four last season, have quietly chipped away in the background, embracing training as they return.
“Some people haven’t returned but we’ll have the numbers to play,” White said.
