A young cyclist out for a morning ride in the Tablelands has been left with serious injuries and flown to Cairns after being struck by a car.

The man in his 20s was riding through Mareeba just after 6am Saturday morning when he was hit by a Rav 4 outside the newly opened Caltex service station at the intersection between Marlone Road and the Kennedy Highway.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 6.04pm where the cyclist was found with serious head, shoulder and head injuries.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man was treated in a serious condition.

“He was transported to Mareeba Hospital in a serious condition then was taken to Cairns by the rescue helicopter at about 8am,” she said.

“We also treated the driver on scene but they were not injured.”

Flight data revealed the man was later arrived in Cairns at 8.47am with a QAS spokeswoman saying the man was in a serious but stable condition when flown.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed officers attended the scene and investigation were ongoing but no charges had been laid.
