FIVE GAMES LIVE: DAY 2 OF CAIRNS HOCKEY’S GRAND FINALS
GAME 2: Saints v Souths, A-grade women’s grand final
Souths’ Caitlyn Whipp should have carried off a grand final hero.
Instead, the premiership-winning goalscorer was taken from the field in the arms of medics after injuring her hamstring searching for a match-sealing goal in the last minute.
There were plenty of chances but the score remain locked at 0-0 at the break.
Neither side truly dominated the first half, with possessoin, field position and shots at goal largely equal midway through the contest.
The chess-like opening stanza set up a final half hour were the right to be called the champion side of 2020 will be up for grabs.
Souths won it all last year so have plenty of experience on the grand stage, while Saints are looking for their first title in years.
The defending premiers benefitted from heavy possession, ideal field position and sustained pressure to have Saints on the ropes.
Repeat penalty corners finally gave way to the match-opening goal in the 41st minute, as Caitlyn Whipp sent one into the box from the edge of the circle for a 1-0 lead.
Souths missed a clear chance to extend the lead when they turned defence into a two-on-one against the Saints’ goalie, but a pass dribbled into touch to give Saints a reprieve.
Souths managed to hold on, though a last-minute raid at goal ended in Whipp going down after injuring her hamstrong.
The siren sounded as she received attention from medics.
Whipp was eventually carried off the field by officials, her goal handing Souths Hockey Club another premiership.
GAME I: Brothers v Saints, under-18s men’s grand final
Two goals within a minute has broken Saints’ hearts and delivered Brothers an incredible grand final.
Saints and Brothers sought to build pressure for the opening 20 minutes, but it would be Saints who made the breakthrough.
Maxwell Williams was the man on the spot, sending the ball into the goal for the 1-0 advantage after 22 minutes.
The score stayed 1-0 until half time.
Brothers kept pushing throughout the second half, and, until one crazy minute turned the decider.
Between the 54th and 55th minutes, Brayden Naess and Harry Pozzi scored for Brothers, handing them a 2-1 lead and control of the dying stages.
Saints pulled their goalie to give themselves an extra attacking player but Brothers refused to let the lead slip, taking home the title with a 2-1 win.
Meanwhile, Brothers TAS pulled off a similar late grand final-clinching goal in the U18B women’s grand final against Souths.
The scores were locked at 0-0 until the last minute when Brothers TAS turned a penalty corner into a premiership, Eadie Coghlan sending the winner into the goal after the siren.
We will show two grand finals live on Friday, with five more on Saturday. Scroll down for the full livestream schedule.
EARLIER: GRAND final day has arrived for Cairns Hockey with the countdown now on to the 2020 deciders - and we will be there on the historic night.
Just a few short months ago it appeared unlikely there would be a hockey season, but the organisation was able to develop and get a compressed campaign off the ground.
Now, after the most unique season in hockey history, the first senior grand finals will be held with the A-grade women’s clash between Souths and Saints to headline the Friday night lineup.
It also marks an historic occasion for the Cairns Post, who will make its first foray into the world of live-streaming community sport by showing seven Cairns Hockey grand finals live on our website.
We will show two grand finals live tonight, before a super Saturday consisting of five deciders, finishing with the A-grade men’s clash between Saints and Souths.
It’s a new service we’re proud to be involved with, particularly with some of our readers unable to move as freely in the community as they want to.
CAIRNS HOCKEY GRAND FINAL COVERAGE

And our hockey partners are loving it too.
Cairns Hockey general manager of operations Kym McPhee-Smith, said they’re simply relieved to have a season up and running.
“We are so lucky to have got our season up and running, and here we are at the finals. It has been a very tough time and I truly feel for our Victorian hockey friends,” she said.
She praised the Cairns Post for its livestream initiative.
“Being able to livestream our games will be awesome for anyone who is not able to make it down to CHA in person,” she said.
She expected friends and family of players to watch from around the country, and even offshore.
Readers will need a Cairns Post subscription to view the games.
