Dear Ed Sheeran,
I just wanted to drop you a line to profusely apologise for the recent press conference you were forced to sit through to announce your highly anticipated upcoming tour.
As a proud Aussie journo and forever fan of yours, it is beyond embarrassing that the level of questioning you received was about how many times you go to the toilet during a live show, or why you didn’t answer a DM by a radio host asking you to do a video for his bride before their wedding 18 months ago.
I’m sorry. Truly. I really don’t want you to think we’re all like that. I promise we’re not.
Some of us really do want to get to know you. The real you. To welcome you to our beautiful country that we know you love as much as we love you and you loved Shane Warne.
Instead, you were peppered with stupid questions designed only to get headlines for their shows, not yours. Of course, you answered every dumb and dumber question with grace, humility and humour. Of course you did, you’re Ed Sheeran and the whole world knows you’re … perfect, pardon the pun. Your music is thoughtful, considered, sensitive and respectful – and that’s how you should be treated.
Not only is it not fair to you, the attention-seeking shenanigans carelessly passed off as journalism took precious time away for real questions. And if that’s not bad enough, radio audiences were then forced to listen to Jimmy & Nath laugh for 20 minutes about what they did and how you reacted. Except it’s not that funny, is it?
Neither was the toilet gag, sorry Intern Pete.
So, Ed Sheeran, I just wanted to tell you that I for one, CAN’T WAIT for your all new Loop Tour. Your local fans have been waiting for you to lovingly serenade us since your last visit, and now we’ve got a countdown happening to the Aussie leg which starts in Perth on January 31 and heads to our own Accor Stadium on February 13 and 14 – oh, what a Valentine’s Day that will be.
And if you want to do any good, meaningful media while you’re here, I’d love to talk to you. I’ve interviewed enough stars to know the good ones and we can all tell you’re one of those.
It would be my pleasure to share the stories behind your songs and give fans a real insight into what you do and why you do it. Because it means a lot to us, what you do.
Your songs are the ones we cry to, that we dance to, the ones that shape us. They are the lyrics and sounds attached to the moments we’ll never forget. Those ones.
If you say yes, I promise I won’t ask you to record a video for my husband or ask about the toilet.
Yours sincerely, Lisa.
PS: I love you. We all do.
