A WOMAN was lucky to escape injury when her car flipped after clipping a parked car on Kensington Rd at Norwood yesterday.

The car rolled at the corner of Charles St just after noon.

The driver clipped an unoccupied parked Mercedes before flipping her car on its side, narrowly avoiding damaging a shop awning.

Pedestrians and bystanders in nearby shops rushed to help the woman, who crawled through the sunroof of the car to safety.

John Quirk, 67, had been driving the Mercedes, which belongs to his son, and said he was grateful the car absorbed most of the crash’s impact.

“I am very grateful the woman wasn’t injured,” Mr Quirk said.

“But I am also grateful the car absorbed most of the crash.

“It was pushed a good four or five metres down the road.

“The car came within half an inch of one of the veranda posts.

“It would have brought down the whole veranda.”

Mr Quirk was sitting in a nearby cafe when he heard the crash.

“I didn’t think much of it at the time. People were rushing to the door and the window to see what happened,” Mr Quirk said. “Then one of the waitresses said ‘John, I think it’s your car’.”

The driver was not injured. Kensington Rd was closed for more than an hour as the car was righted.
