Train and Car crash at Two Wells

A MALE driver has been flown to Adelaide with serious injuries after crashing into the side of a freight train north of Adelaide.

Emergency services were called to Temby Rd at 2.30pm.

The car was driving towards Mallala Rd approaching the intersection when the driver slammed on the brakes and slid into the side of the freight train which was travelling about 100km/h.

The car was thrown 20 metres in the crash, while the train took several hundred metres to come to a halt.

Beau Doman was the first to the scene. He said he heard the train sound its horn as the car approached and the bang of the car slamming into the train.

When he got to the driver there was blood throughout the car and the man was bleeding from his head and hand.

Two dogs were also in the car at the time of the crash.

One remains missing and is suspected to have run away after the car rolled.

The other was injured but has been taken by friends of the driver.

“I saw the car over in the paddock smoking,” Mr Doman said.

“I ran over to see if there was anyone in the car and there was. There were also two dogs, one of which is missing.

“The train swept the car which rolled. The driver couldn’t remember his name or the dogs’ names.

“He went sideways into the train but I think he’s pretty lucky that the car absorbed most of it.

Collisions and near misses at the crossing are common, according to Mr Doman who lives close to the tracks.

“It always happens at this crossing,” Mr Doman said.

“It needs boom gates but they are not going put them in because it’s a dirt road.

“Trucks get hit here all the time.”

The 55-year-old driver was treated at the scene for head lacerations and neck pain. He has been flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a stable condition.

Major crash investigators have been advised of the crash but are not attending the scene.

Minor repairs are being made to the train which is expected to resume its journey early Tuesday evening.

There has been no reported track damage.
