Mock terrorists ‘attack’ Adelaide Oval in SA security exercise
DOZENS of actors helped simulate a mock terror attack at Adelaide Oval, which included a scenario where a van ploughed over a dummy before hitting at barrier in the stadium’s northern car park.
A VAN ploughed over a dummy before smashing into a barrier at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday as part of a mock terror attack at the arena.
Police, SA Ambulance Service, Metropolitan Fire Service, Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority, St John SA, Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure and private security experts ran the mock terrorist attack to test and hone the skills of the state’s emergency services.
Various emergency scenarios involving up to 40 actors took place around the oval on Wednesday morning before the main, three hour-long exercise, began at 9.30am.
The van attack was a simulation of recent terrorist strikes which have occurred in Europe.
Last month, four people were killed and another 15 injured when a truck drove into a crowd of people in central Stockholm, Sweden.
Paramedics with the assistance of MFS and other security responded to injured actors strewn across the carpark after the main attack.
Meanwhile, police sprung into action to track down and arrest suspects involved in the mock strike.
Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Bob Fauser said the exercise was critical to ensuring emergency services officers were prepared for a potential terrorist attack.
“South Australia Police work closely with the Adelaide Oval and other operators of places of mass gathering to ensure appropriate measures are in place to secure these venues,” he said.
“The national terrorism threat level remains at probable.
“While there is no specific information to suggest there will be an attack in Adelaide similar to those (recently) overseas, exercises such as today’s are vital to ensuring emergency services are well prepared in handling and managing an incident.”
Surrounding residents and businesses were informed ahead of the drills.
